The Convening
They had built a room with no windows so that nothing outside could be blamed for what was decided inside. Karim noticed this first, the way he noticed all the things meant not to be noticed, and he said nothing, because saying it would have been the first move in a game he had not yet decided to play.
Six chairs. A table the color of old bone. And on the wall, in a language none of them shared as a first tongue, a single sentence carved by whoever had convened councils here before them: Decide as if you will be remembered by the ones you decide for.
Amara read it twice and felt the old anger move in her like weather. The ones they would decide for were not in the room. They never were. That was the whole trouble with rooms like this — the people the decision would happen to were always somewhere else, being spoken about in the warm, careful voices of people who would be fine either way.
Wei was already reading the briefing, and the briefing was already wrong. Not lying — he was careful about that distinction — but wrong in the way confident documents are wrong, rounding the unknown down to zero so the page would feel finished. He underlined nothing. He simply began, quietly, to keep his own count.
